I have lived on Cape Cod for 40 years, so I am profoundly influenced by the beautiful watery landscapes that surround me. The marshes change color with each season, and take on new looks with sunrise and sunset. The light is sometimes not to be believed.
Generally, I paint from imagination and sketches that I have done to remind myself of a certain lay of the land or shape of a tree line. You know when you come upon a sky that takes your breath away? That's when I'll make color notes.
I choose to paint from memory for a couple reasons. First, using sketches and my imagination keeps my style loose and results in a painting that is about the feeling of a place rather than the location. I like seeing the hand behind the work. Second, because I don't paint a specific place, I'm inviting you, the viewer, to bring your own experience to the painted landscape.
I have painted for my entire life. In fact, in fourth grade, while on my way to my art lessons at the Berkshire Art Museum, I looked at my wooden paint box and said, "Yup, I am an artist- if Picasso can sign his paintings with one name, so can I." That name is Odile, my middle name ( after my French grandmother)
And so it has been ever since. I was trained in watercolors at that time and went on to acrylics in college, followed by large scale pastel works. Now, it's oil that I love. My work has been exhibited in many juried art shows and is featured in magazines, as well as private and public collections worldwide.
My favorite photo of me and my mom at the beach on Cape Cod in the 50's. I was doing a watercolor painting, mom was holding my paints, and I used the ocean water.
The beauty of waterways and marshes , whether on a sunny or stormy day, inspire me to paint the landscape in an impressionist or abstract depiction.
For me, using oil paint and a brush on canvas is the closest thing to heaven. I may be a purist, but the dialogue I have with my work is everything.
You know, a big list of awards and galleries doesn't mean as much to me as when a young child is stopped by my work, gets dreamy, and exclaims, " I love these."
